The Director of National Accounts has the ability to help large national clients improve the lives of their employees and families, by delivering health benefits in new and innovative ways. This position is influential within Premera as well as across the Blue Cross Blue Shield system.

In this position, you will oversee and manage all sales and account manage activities for national (5000+ employees) accounts, staying abreast of market trends and providing guidance to leadership on benefit options and/or changes in response to requests for proposal, renewal actions or market demands, consistent with administrative capability. You will serve as a negotiating liaison between the Premera Underwriting Department, brokers, consultants, and clients. The Director of National Accounts leads a team in preparing account specific sales strategies. Due to the national reach of national account clients, this role serves as a Premera representative on BCBS and Consortium activities related to the National Accounts marketplace, and coordinates with other Blue Plans as necessary.

What you’ll do

  • Monitor trend and market studies, and other qualitative data to provide recommendations on company offerings.

  • Continually gather feedback and other information, and lead efforts in developing Premera’s response to market changes.

  • Lead team efforts to ensure leading edge finalist presentations, RFP materials and periodic updates to clients that evolve in response to current trends, messaging and capabilities.

  • Lead the development and execution of client specific business and strategic sales plans, with focus on short- and long-term goals to ensure achievement of revenue, membership and contribution margins.

  • Holds P&L responsibility for their account(s), including driving results related to contribution margin, and operating income.

  • Manage annual budget related to sales strategic plan including sales compensation, and relevant G&A expenditures.

  • Serve on Blue Cross Blue Shield and Consortium workgroups as national account representative.

  • Develop performance measurement tools, including weekly one-on-one meeting and quarterly performance review and feedback sessions with account management and sales leadership.

  • Work in partnership with Actuarial, Underwriting, Product, Marketing, Operations, Legal and Regulatory Affairs, and Health Care Services to development and implement programs specific to national clients.

  • Lead cross-functional team in selling Premera ancillary products.

  • Educate clients, broker, and consultants regarding account’s financial aspects, funding, benefit options, and Premera’s National Account strategies.

  • Coordinate and develop adjustments to renewal strategies and communications with appropriate internal plan management.

  • Serve as negotiating liaison between clients, brokers, consultants, and Premera Underwriting.

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with at least two “key” decision-makers at each consulting house.

What you’ll bring

  • 10 years proven sales/service experience in the 500+ size group market in the health insurance industry.

  • 3 years of direct or indirect management and supervisory experience, this would also include leading proposal teams and internal cross functional teams.

  • Strong customer advocacy and consultative skills. Demonstrated ability to understand the customer’s culture, perspective and needs.

  • Strategic thinking skills that can help the consultant community understand where the market is heading and communicate Premera’s approach to dealing with the changes.

  • Strong human relations, organizational savvy and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated effective problem-solving and strategic ability, as well as the ability to recognize and overcome internal and external barriers within an organization.

  • Demonstrated negotiation and facilitation skills involving brokers/consultants, clients, and underwriting.

  • Ability/willingness for limited overnight travel.

  • Already possesses, or has the ability to obtain within 60 days, agent’s license.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
