As a Reporting Accountant I for our Accounting & Reporting team , you will play a key role in ensuring the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP, Statements of Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP), and internal reporting requirements for the Premera group of companies. You will report to the Manager of Accounting and Reporting and provide technical expertise for multi-company reporting functions for Premera Blue Cross and its subsidiaries, a $2 billion group of companies. You will have exposure to executives and provide guidance to the business. You’ll draw on your highly specialized accounting knowledge, strong analytical capabilities to solve complex problems, and advanced technology skills to manage data and continuously improve accuracy and the reporting process, as well as workload capacity and process efficiency.

What you’ll do

  • Prepare the consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP, as well as:

  • Financials for board reporting and for executive management

  • Quarterly and annual statutory filings in accordance with SSAP and individual state insurance departments' regulations

  • Process month-end close including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses

  • Research and recommend solutions for GAAP and statutory accounting transactions and reporting requirements

  • Support the annual GAAP and statutory audits

  • Partner with management and associates in other functional areas to assist with accounting related analysis and policy development

  • Seek opportunities for process improvement to gain efficiencies and take lead role to implement

  • Anticipate the impact of the changing business environment on assigned work areas and adjust work assignments and processes as necessary

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Ideal candidates will have the following:

  • Three (3) years of public accounting experience - OR -

  • Two (2) years of public accounting experience along with certification as a CPA

  • Big Four experience

  • Experience with investment accounting, insurance regulatory reporting, and/or accounting software (PeopleSoft or similar) is preferred, but not required

  • Solid knowledge of GAAP and internal controls

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service skills

  • Solid analytical and research skills with attention to detail

  • Strong organization skills to prioritize and meet deadlines

  • Collaborative problem-solving skills including recommendation and implementation of improvements

  • Proficiency with data management and research tools, Excel and Word

  • Strong understanding of fundamental accounting controls and financial reporting procedures with the ability to apply these skills

  • Proven leadership ability
