As an Underwriting Manager – Daily Operations Mid-Market for our Underwriting team, you will have the opportunity to be a thought leader and market strategist for the most prominent Blue plan in the state of Washington. You will draw upon your high collaboration skills to work with other functional areas within Premera to execute on Premera’s vision to make healthcare simple and easy, and to eliminate waste while containing cost for the customers that we serve. As a Manager, you will be working with a high-performing team of strong contributors as well as a great slice of mid-level and officer leadership all who are aligned to the Premera purpose. You will be part of bringing positive change within communities in our state. This role will primarily serve our 51-5000 member groups (mid-market) within the state. You will have the leeway to formulate and drive the outcome of business problems, and expect that your Director will establish overall goals and provide support and mentorship. What you’ll do

  • Develop and deploy management monitoring reports for to effectively manage the business and report results to senior management teams

  • Manage underwriting processes, pricing and/or contracting activities to ensure that rates and policy provisions are adequate to meet the risks assumed and the profit objectives of the company

  • Provide integral support to Sales and Account Management teams, in internal and external presentations and negotiations

  • Manage the budget process for assigned cost center(s), subject to corporate guidelines and senior management requirements

  • Manage the performance appraisal process for your direct reports and create/maintain core competency in Underwriting by hiring and training high-quality, experienced and energetic team

  • Serve as primary point of contact within Premera for other departments seeking information related to Underwriting policy

  • Develop and maintain pricing data and contract generation systems that support departmental and strategic management decisions with timely and accurate information

  • Assist Underwriting senior management in sustaining long-term policies and procedures to formulate work unit strategy in support of organizational strategy

  • Monitor and review data from internal departments for content and accuracy, identify associated problems and develop solutions

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field of study or four (4) years’ work experience

  • Five (5) years of underwriting, regulatory, or health and welfare consulting experience

  • Previous underwriting experience

  • Two (2) years’ experience in health insurance management or leadership position is highly desired

  • Master's degree and CEBS (Certified Employee Benefit Specialist) Designation would be nice to have

  • Demonstrated track record in providing leadership in complex business cases and/or projects

  • Substantial knowledge of the health insurance industry, and of the group administration and/or underwriting function within an insurance carrier setting

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate "win-win" situations as it relates to business decisions

  • Ability to assess market conditions and recommend contract and underwriting improvements to support competitive position and/or revenue growth opportunities
